Out walking, we chanced upon a neighborhood that we later learned was very old. The well tended homes in this area were colorful and lovely. |

Many homes seemed to feature courtyards. A few, like the one shown here, positioned their outdoor space at the front of the building. |

Thick adobe walls, shaded areas and small windows were typical on the buildings we saw. Very unlike the wood frame houses of Minnesota. |

Pebbles formed the yards. There was no grass in sight and no doubt that this was a desert place. |

The colors really impressed. Here, the ochre walls and blue trim beautifully compliment the desert sand and desert sky. |

In the old neighborhood (or barrio, in southwest parlance), even multi-unit apartment buildings remained true to the historic style. Zoning, perhaps? |
