Indeed, please drive carefully. Don't hit that beautiful bunny if she tries to cross the road.

Our base of operations for the Newark antique fair was not Newark. It was Cotgrave, a small town about twenty minutes drive from Newark. Julie chose Cotgrave and the Primrose House because, as you'll see, it's especially pretty.

Paul, the proprietor, told me that the main portion of Primrose House was quite old. Sadly, I can't recall how old, but certainly 19th century. The addition on the back had to be built to strict specifications that apply to historic buildings in Cotgrave. In the new addition, the beams were joined with dovetails and pegs, and used no modern hardware.

This is the lovely side yard of the Primrose House. In the back, by the lawn chairs, is a chicken coop.

And here's one of the chickens. Susie, the other proprietor of Primrose House, prepared really delicious breakfasts using eggs laid by her chickens, while we sat at her kitchen table and chatted her up. How coincidental that our two B&Bs were both named Primrose.

Julie asked a few people we met in Bunny and Cotgrave where we might see an English hare. These creatures are longer-legged and longer-eared than our bunnies back home. Seeing one would have been a thrill for Julie. We were told that open fields were best, so we ventured to the edge of Cotgrave where we found a horse path to hike down. Here, there were plenty of open fields, but they were protected by hedgerows.

I quickly learned that hedgerows are no wimpy bush. They are ancient, bonsai-like, and nearly impenetrable. But we wouldn't be deterred and we found a spot on this hedgerow that we could crawl through. Then we stood, quietly, downwind, and for a good bit of time, scanning the field for hares. Sadly, no hares were spotted. I thought, this experience will be a nice addition to my list of kooky things done when traveling.

Had Julie and I not sought a hare sighting, I might never have found myself on the inside of an English hedgerow.
