Julie and I wasted no time, and set out on our first night to Ronnie Scott's jazz club. There, we listened to the terrific house band, and a few guest players. We also met up with Julie's dear friend Dani, and her companion Royston.

The capacity in the main room at Ronnie Scott's is about 220. This is similar to the Dakota in Minneapolis, and a bit bigger than the Village Vanguard, in New York. For Jazz, and the intimacy it requires, small venues are best.

Ronnie Scott's jazz club is absolutely London's equivalent to the Village Vanguard — both clubs are legendary and many great jazz players have performed at both clubs. Now that I've been to both, I feel I can add a feather to my jazz cap.

Here's a building that stopped me in my tracks on night number one in London. I have no idea what this place is except pretty, and prettily lit.

On the subject of prettily lit: Lit-up windows on the third floor of the smallish brick building shown here, caught my attention. I imagine that this is a posh residence, and that the residents have private parking behind a locked gate. Lovely!

This is Brick Lane in London's east end. Julie led us here to experience her favorite salt beef bagel. In her London days, on late nights out clubbing with friends, bagels were the perfect post-drinking snack. Soon, I would learn just how perfect.

Look at how happy my baby is! She's back in her old stomping grounds.

Brick Lane certainly is rich in street art. For the uninitiated, the quantity of graffiti might be a bit intimidating. But I was assured by the number of people out and about, and the squeaky clean streets, that all was OK on Brick Lane.

Rough Trade Records, just off Brick Lane is famous, not just for its huge vinyl selection, but also for in-store performances. Artists such as PJ Harvey, the Smiths and Jeff Buckley have played here. There is also a Rough Trade record label representing notable acts such as the Decemberists, Pulp and Sufjan Stevens (to name very few).

Brick Lane's vintage shops (there are a lot of them) were buttoned down on this night. That's OK, we'll be back during business hours for shopping and more merriment.
